Fifth Grader from Ralston Raises $2,000 to Support their Mourning Teacher

The bond between a fifth-grade student and her teacher at Ralston is stronger than ever, as the teacher, Janice Rhods, mourns the loss of her baby boy. Her son, Caden, recently passed away due to a rare heart issue. However, about a month before his death, fifth-grade student Adrianna Case stepped up to help in a significant way. Rhods has been dealing with the loss for about two weeks, remembering her son's smile and finding solace in the thought of him at peace. Caden had hypoplastic left heart syndrome and spent much of his short life in pain and in and out of hospitals. He found joy in being outside, but unfortunately, only had a couple of months to experience it. In November, Caden contracted a common cold that quickly escalated into a fever and high heart rate. His fragile heart couldn't handle the strain, leading to his passing on November 17th. As a result, Rhods had to spend time away from the classroom to be with her son while also trying to be there for her two other children at home and her students at Karen Western Elementary School in Ralston. It was during this difficult time that Case noticed Rhods' struggle and decided to help in any way she could. She initially got him a blanket but felt it wasn't enough, so she started a GoFundMe campaign with the help of her mother. Together, they were able to raise $2,000 for Rhods. The money is not the most significant part for Rhods; she appreciates Case's display of compassion and caring for others. Rhods believes that Case would show the same kindness to anyone in need. In return, Case expresses genuine love for Rhods. Rhods plans to return to work on Monday and acknowledges that she wouldn't be able to cope without the support of amazing students like Adrianna.
