The Calallen Wildcats football team is not only focused on their upcoming game, but they are also giving back to the community through charity work. Heaters for Heroes is a recent initiative started by David Salinas Jr. after hearing about a veteran in need of a heater. Salinas Jr. brought the idea to his son and his son's friend, who are both players on the football team. The players recognize the importance of helping the community, especially veterans, during the holiday season. So far, they have donated 15 space heaters to veterans in need. The impact of this charity work is hoped to inspire more young men to get involved and help more veterans. Freshman football player Drayson Gamez even joined in by donating heaters. The players are learning that there are other meaningful things in life beyond football and are becoming more aware of the needs of others. This initiative has gained momentum, starting with seniors and trickling down to freshmen. The fundraiser will continue as long as there is a need for heaters during the cold season. During the hot season, the focus will shift to finding fans for veterans. The football game against Boerne in San Antonio awaits the team on Friday night in the regional finals. Veterans in need of a heater or individuals interested in getting involved can contact Salinas Jr.'s office by calling 361-668-5715.
